Not concerned with grammar or spelling, but rather helping the author deliver clear coherent writing to their audience. Focuses on structure and content. This is also known as developmental editing. The goal for this type of editing is to develop the best possible book for the reader with sales in mind.

Manuscripts with significant problems in logic, clarity, etc. With this type of editing, the author needs what is referred to as a "book doctor."

*Can typically edit 1-5 pages an hour.

Turning audio into text.

Strictly transcribing or typing from paper to computer with no proofreading or editing needed.

Detecting and correcting production errors of text; one final review.

*Can typically edit 9-13 pages an hour.

Does not go page by page, but gives a broad overview on how to improve.
